ACC and Fees — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see a physiotherapist or acupuncturist without a GP referral? Yes. In most cases, you can be seen directly without visiting your GP first. Our clinic can assess your injury and lodge an ACC claim if appropriate. This applies to both physiotherapy and acupuncture at our Takapuna Seven clinic.

What does ACC cover? ACC covers injuries caused by accidents or specific incidents, including many sports, work and everyday injuries. If your claim is accepted, ACC contributes towards the cost of your physiotherapy or acupuncture treatment.

Do I have to pay a surcharge?

For ACC acupuncture, no. We do not charge a surcharge for ACC-funded acupuncture — there is nothing further for you to pay. This is our current fee policy and is subject to change, so if you have an injury, it is worth getting seen while it is in place.

For all our other services, including ACC physiotherapy and private appointments, a surcharge does apply, because ACC does not cover the full cost of treatment. Please contact us for our current fees.

How long does an ACC claim take? Most ACC claims lodged by our clinic are processed within 24–48 hours, although some claims may take longer if additional information is required.

What happens after my ACC claim is accepted? Once your claim has been accepted, you can continue your rehabilitation with us. Your treatment plan will be based on your injury, goals and progress, and will be reviewed regularly throughout your recovery.

Can you refer me for an X-ray or ultrasound? Yes. Our physiotherapist can refer you directly for an X-ray or ultrasound scan when it is clinically appropriate. If further investigations or specialist input are needed, we can also discuss the most appropriate referral pathway.

When should I come in after an injury? Generally, the sooner the better. Early assessment can help identify the injury, provide the right advice and begin rehabilitation before problems become more persistent.

Can I still come if my ACC claim is declined? Yes. If ACC doesn't accept your claim, you can still receive physiotherapy or acupuncture as a private patient.

Can I have acupuncture while pregnant? Yes, from 12 weeks onwards. We do not treat during the first trimester. Treatment for pregnancy-related discomfort is a private appointment, as pregnancy itself is not an injury. However, if you have an injury while pregnant and your ACC claim is accepted, that treatment is ACC-funded in the normal way — being pregnant does not exclude you from ACC cover.

I don't like needles. Can you still treat me? Yes. Cupping and Muscle Release massage (body percussion therapy) are completely needle-free, and we offer them as a standalone Private Cupping & Muscle Release appointment in 30- and 45-minute sessions.

Where are you located? Seven Physio & Acupuncture is on Level 3, 507 Lake Road, Takapuna, Auckland 0622.
