Knee Pain Physiotherapy in Takapuna
Knee Pain Physiotherapy in Takapuna
Knee pain can affect people of all ages, from runners and gym-goers to those who simply
enjoy walking or gardening. It may develop after an injury or gradually over time, making
everyday activities like climbing stairs, squatting or getting up from a chair uncomfortable.
What causes knee pain?
There are many possible causes of knee pain, including:
Patellofemoral pain
Knee osteoarthritis
Meniscus irritation
Ligament sprains
Tendon-related pain
One question we often hear is, "Do I need a scan?"
Not always.
Many knee conditions can be diagnosed through a detailed assessment, and
scans aren't necessary for everyone. In many cases, the symptoms and clinical
examination provide more useful information than imaging alone.
Where a scan is needed, our physiotherapist can refer you directly for an X-ray or
ultrasound — you do not need to go back to your GP for that.
How can physiotherapy help?
Treatment depends on what's causing your symptoms, but it may include:
Individualised exercise
Manual therapy where appropriate
Advice on modifying activities
A gradual return to work, sport and exercise
For many knee conditions, improving strength, movement and confidence is an important
part of recovery, rather than avoiding activity completely.
Is it covered by ACC?
Knee injuries from sport, a fall or a specific incident are generally covered by ACC. You do
not need a GP referral. Our clinic is a registered ACC treatment provider and can lodge the
claim for you at your first appointment, usually processed within 24–48 hours. A surcharge
applies to ACC physiotherapy.
Gradual-onset knee pain such as osteoarthritis is usually not covered by ACC, but we can
still see you privately at our Takapuna Seven clinic.
When should you seek advice?
If your knee pain has been bothering you for more than a couple of weeks, is limiting your
daily activities or stopping you from enjoying exercise, it's worth having it assessed. Early
treatment can often make recovery smoother and help prevent ongoing problems.
